Introducing Liam, a table tennis player for Nottingham University. Liam has accomplished many sporting goals and is currently in the top 50 in the Senior Men's ranking list.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST PLAY TABLE TENNIS?
I first played table tennis when my dad bought a half-sized Table Tennis table for our living room at home. I found it really enjoyable and was keen to play more.
WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU HAD A TALENT FOR TABLE TENNIS?
After joining a lot of sports clubs and trying out different sports at the same time, I seemed to improve at Table Tennis at a much faster rate. When I got the opportunity to play some tournaments for the first time, it was clear that I was able to win matches against older and more experienced competitors.
HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCING UNIVERSITY LIFE AND WORK WITH YOUR SPORT?
At first balancing university, work and sport was challenging and it took me time to adapt. However, this was a big learning curve for me and developed my time management skills significantly. Now I am much more comfortable handling multiple commitments and I use table tennis as a way to relax from the stress of work, whilst also improving my standard.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?
My best sporting achievement is holding both the Schools English National Under 19 Title and the British Schools Under 18 Title at the same time.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR SPORT?
I like that fact that Table Tennis is fast paced and requires you to think very quickly. The sport requires you to anticipate where your opponent is going to hit the ball within a couple of seconds and then try to outwit them using a range of tactics including spin, speed and positioning.
WHATS THE BEST PEICE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN?
The best advice I have been given is that, the most successful people and athletes in the world have all lost, but they have positively learned from it, if you learn from a loss then it can be regarded as a win and you can be better than before.
WHAT ADVICE WOULF YOU GIVE TO OTHER ASPIRING TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS?
I would say that, like many other sports, practice makes perfect. If you want to improve or be the best, then you have to be committed to train your hardest every day and to not be afraid to challenge yourself outside your comfort zone.
WHATS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL WITH TABLE TENNIS?
My ultimate goal in Table Tennis is to help the University of Nottingham Table Tennis team win the BUCS National Team Championships Cup again for the third time and as the Table Tennis President, develop the best University Table Tennis programme in the UK. Nationally I aim to be an established Top 10 senior player in the UK.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
In my spare time, I watch football and other sports. To relax I regularly organise things to do with my friends and read interesting articles online.
