Mari had a natural talent from a young age, matched with her unique determination and mental strength she has gone on to be ranked number 1 in the UK at all age levels up to the U17's in Squash. That is why she has been chosen to become one of our very first Gymphlex Heroes.
We recently caught up with Squash sensation, Mari Taylor, for a short interview.
What do you like most about your sport?
I love the opportunities it brings to me, such as the places I get to go to and the people I meet. Squash gives me a goal to go out and achieve.
What has been the biggest factor in getting to where you are now?
From a young age I have loved Squash and I have progressed from there. My dad is my coach and a great inspiration to me having been a professional squash player himself, he knows what it takes to become a top player.
What was the best piece of advice you have been given?
I was always told not to let Squash consume me, especially from a young age, where a lot of pressure was put on. The one phrase I remember hearing is "Balance, in everything you do". That if I was to lose, or not make it in Squash then it wasn’t the end of the world. I think it was really helpful to me to keep a level head.
What advice would you give to aspiring young squash players?
Grab every opportunity you can! Enjoy the game and don’t play because you feel you have to but because you love the game.
What is your biggest achievement so far in your sport?
I think being ranked number 1 in all age groups in the UK, including U17’s. I am now looking to get ranked number 1 for U19’s but I have to win the upcoming Silver Sanctioned Event. Another achievement I am really proud of is being the only girl drafted into the England squad for Squash at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Do you have an ultimate goal within Squash?
The ultimate goal is to be ranked in the top 10 in the world, there is a lot of hard work to be put in for that goal, but that’s the dream.
What is your favourite thing to do off the court?
I love listening to music! I also love photography and taking photos.
When is your next tournament?
I have the Silver Sanctioned Event on the 28th May, but the next big tournament will be the world championships at the end of the summer.
